The traditional way of learning guitar is by taking private lessons from a guitar teacher. The student typically meets with the instructor once a week for 30 minutes at a cost of about $15-25 per week. This is certainly a great option, and perhaps the best way to learn to play: under the personal guidance of a dedicated teacher. However, in many cases private lessons are not a good option due to the time, cost, and transportation factors involved.

The good news for guitar players is that there is a wide range of alternatives to private instruction. Guitar lesson and instructional books have been a mainstay for years. Technology developments then brought us lessons in the form of videotapes and DVDs, as well as multimedia software programs to run on the PC.

Today, widespread access to the internet has caused a major revolution in guitar instruction methods and availability. Now an abundance (some might say over-abundance!) of information on various guitar lesson choices is available in minutes through your favorite search engine. The array of choices is staggering, ranging from free online guitar lessons, to high-end distance learning guitar instruction leading to a certificate from Berklee College of Music,

Aside from better visibility into the options, there have also been tremendous advances in the technology used to develop and deliver the instructional material. Interactive video lessons in which the student controls the pace of learning and the tempo of the material are a good example of this. Online guitar lessons and products can be accessed immediately on the Web, either on-demand or downloaded to the local PC. This gives great flexibility on when and where to learn.

Guitar Lessons Options

Aside from private lessons, there are three basic formats of guitar lessons and instructional material.

Books- If you’re on a budget and like the idea of the portability of a book, this may be the way to go for you. Books often come with a CD to provide audio tracks. Typical Cost: $15-25

Video-based lessons- In my experience, pure video-based lessons are a good “icing on the cake” to help you learn, but not typically a good foundational guitar lesson program. They often lack supporting learning materials needed to be effective for baseline learning.

Multimedia Online Lessons- The Web, plus advances in the technology for creating learning material such as video, has really opened the door to some great multimedia guitar lesson programs.. These can be delivered and accessed on several ways: downloaded for use on your PC; accessed directly from your PC with a live web connection, or as a physical CD/DVD that you run on your PC.

Sorting through the many options can be made easier with information dedicated to this topic on various guitar websites, such as this online guitar lessons guide.

Wrap-up

For those wanting to learn to play guitar, or to play better, there is no better time than now to take advantage to the available online guitar lesson and learning options. The realm of guitar instruction is certainly one that has benefited from the Internet!

Online Acoustic Guitar Lessons For Beginners – Getting to Grips With the Fundamentals of the Guitar

You can decide to purchase either a second hand guitar or a new one, depending on whichever you believe will suit you the most. Once you have bought yourself a guitar, it is then possible to get started taking online acoustic guitar lessons for beginners.

Beginner lessons are guitar classes taught to beginners so they understand the basics of the guitar and the way to play it.

The very first thing you’ll be taught will not be easy methods to play the guitar, but what the various parts of the guitar are.

All internet websites supplying online acoustic guitar lessons for beginners start their teachings using this point. This makes sense because it is not recommended to learn a musical instrument while not first knowing its parts.

As well as knowing each part of the guitar, you also have to understand the functions of every specific component. Knowing the different parts of your guitar and their functions familiarizes you with the guitar.

Basic Tips For Online Acoustic Guitar Lessons For Beginners:

After instructing you on the different parts of the guitar, the next point online guitar lessons for beginners educate you on are the names of the different strings on the guitar.

Are you aware that all guitars don’t always have the normal six strings? You can find guitars which have twelve strings too.

After learning about the strings, the next phase is to sit and learn the different methods for you to play the guitar. Exactly what positions can you think of, in which to play the guitar? Despite the fact that you can be extremely creative and come up with a number of positions, the fundamental positions are standing, and seated!

Studying the postures also explains the various grips you may use to hold your guitar while playing. Once you are finished with these fundamentals, the next thing which you find out in beginner guitar lessons is generally how to use the guitar.

This includes the best way to form the various chords, the right way to strum the strings so that you will get the proper tone, etc.

Online Acoustic Guitar Lessons For Beginners – The Value of Guitar Theory:

There’s one way of thinking that highlights the need to learn guitar music theory while taking beginner guitar lessons. The logic for this is straightforward: when you know the essential theory, it becomes much easier to know the chords.

Having said that, this isn’t a vital practice; in fact, quite a few online guitar lessons eliminate the necessity for knowledge of guitar theory as a requirement for mastering the chords along with other elaborate things about the guitar.

In essence, the requirement for guitar theory understanding would rely totally on your degree of fascination with the instrument. Should you be considering to take up playing the guitar full-time, it seems sensible to understand the theoretical aspects as well.

Nevertheless, for anyone who is taking it up as simply as something you want to learn to help you to play a few of your best numbers, then it seems sensible to simply go ahead with the online tutorials alone and study the different chords.

Now that you have a good strategy, it’s time for you to get out there and begin taking your own private online guitar lessons for beginners.

Free Guitar Lessons For Beginners – How to Tune the Guitar

Before you jump in to any free guitar lessons for beginners you may have found online there is one very important skill you need to learn and that is how to tune your guitar. Tuning the guitar is the most important skill to learn for the beginner guitarist. After all, if your guitar is not in tune, how can you play all your favourite tunes or strum along with guitar lessons. But often this is a real stumbling block for some beginners, but tuning your guitar need not be a difficult task.

The easiest way for the beginner to tune the guitar is by using an electronic tuner which can be purchased from any good music or guitar store. These tuners are small and inexpensive and will quite literally save you a lot of time and frustration. However, it is often the case that an electronic tuner is not available then you will have to tune your guitar by ear. Neglecting to learn this valuable skill will hinder your guitar playing advancement.

Before you begin to tune your guitar there are a few important points to remember:

  1. Before you start to play your guitar or use any free lessons for beginners you may have found on the net you should get into the habit of tuning your guitar. This should be done every time to want to play.
  2. the concept of ‘tuning’ is to make sure your guitar sounds more-or-less like every other guitar out there by putting each of the six strings into tune with each other. The standard tuning on most guitars is (from low-to-high) E – A – D – G – B – e A good way to remember this order is: “Elephants And Donkeys Grow Big ears.”
  3. You should always ‘tune’ each string UP to its specific note not down to the note. This means you should turn the ‘machine-head’ to increase the tension on the string until it reaches the desired tone, but be careful not to over-tighten the string it may end up snapping!

So now that you have the basics, let us dive in and tune the guitar.

Step 1: The first thing you need when tuning your guitar is a reference note so you know where to start from. Reference notes can come from a piano, an in-tune guitar, a tuning fork, the all powerful electronic tuner or by searching on-line (a simple search on Google for ‘on-line tuner’ will bring back hundreds of sites to use). You should start with the low E (that is the top string and the thickest). You need to tune this string to sound exactly like the note you use for your reference. Remember to tune up not down. If you tune too far, slacken off the tension and start again.

Step 2: Now you are going to tune the next string down (the 5th string) to match the A note. We do this by matching a note on the 6th string ( the one you previously tuned to E) by playing a note on the new string to be tuned (the 5th) and making sure they sound the same. Place your first finger of your left hand (right hand if your guitar is a left-hand model) just behind the fifth fret of the top (in tune string). Using your other hand, play the 6th string and then play the 5th string (do they sound the same?). If the two notes don’t match you need to adjust the tension on the 5th string using the machine-heads until they ring out the exactly the same. Your 5th string is now in tune.

Step 3: Now to tune the 4th string (D). The technique outlined in step 2 is exactly what we are going to do to tune the 4th string but this time you are going to place your finger on the 5th string (A) at the 5th fret and then play the string then play the 4th string (do they sound the same?). Turn the machine-head on the 4th string until the notes match. Your 4th (D) string is now in tune.

Step 4: OK, now onto the next string – the 3rd or G. Same as before but this time place your finger on the 4th string (D) at it’s 5th fret and play the string, then play the 3rd string. Again adjust the tension on the 3rd string until they sound the same. Your 3rd (G) string is now in tune.

Step 5: Now it is time to tune the 2nd string (B) and to do that you need to place your finger on the 3rd string (G) this time on the 4th fret and play the string. Play the 2nd string and adjust until they sound the same. Your 2nd string is now in tune.

Step 6: Lastly we are going to tune the 1st string, this is the high ‘e’ string and the thinnest on your guitar. To do this you need to place your finger on the 2nd (B) string at the 5th fret and play the string. Play the 1st string and adjust the tension until the two strings sound the same. Congratulations you have now successfully tuned your guitar!

Now it is time to put all your hard work into practice by learning how to play your guitar through the many wonderful and amazing free guitar lessons for beginners that are floating around in cyber-space and on great guitar websites.

Guitar Training Videos

Chances are that if you have asked someone if you can use their guitar for a while, it would probably be an old classical acoustic guitar or maybe a steel string acoustic. These guitars are excellent to learn on because electric guitars require things like cables, amps, speakers and power. With acoustic guitars you only need a pick.

Because there are many types of guitars; being Classical, Acoustic and Electric the three main ones, I wanted to have a look at what guitar is the best one for you to learn on.

OK you have found a style of music that you like. Try and find the video for that song and watch it.

There will probably be a section in there where the band is playing. Look at the guitarist. Is he/she playing on an electric guitar or an acoustic guitar? What brand is it? What style? If you know the exact guitar from the video, you can ask to play it at your local guitar shop to see if it suits you.
